5 Steps to Mailing Wedding Invitations

You finally received your dream stationary and now you are ready to mail them out.  Not so fast!!  With all that time and money it took you to select the perfect  design you wouldn’t want your invitations to be ruined or returned to you for insufficient postage.   We broke it down and provided a step-by-step guide to prevent you from making common mailing mistakes. Follow our advice so your invitations arrive to your guests in tact and on time.


Pre-address and pre-stamp RSVP envelopes.

Eliminate any confusion by pre-addressing your RSVP envelopes with your name and address so guests know where to send them back. You will also want to avoid having your guests pay for postage. Make it easier for them to reply by pre-stamping the envelope with the proper postage.


Tuck, Stack, and Stuff. 

We recommend simply tucking the RSVP card under the reply envelope flap so that part of the text is covered by the flap. Do not stuff the RSVP cards inside the envelopes. Then, stack all insert cards in size order on top of the main invitation with the smallest card on top of the pile. If your invitation has a pocket, then place inserts inside the pocket in size order. Finally, stuff everything inside the main envelope so the the front side is the first thing your guests will see when pulling it out of the envelope. The front side of the invitation will be facing the back side of the envelope.


Seal the envelopes.

Seal the envelope with a glue stick to make sure your invite is secured while in transit. Do not lick or use water or wet glue that will wet and/or warp the envelopes.  You can also consider sealing your envelopes with a wax seal or personalized stickers.


Get postage estimate and purchase stamps.

Take one fully assembled invitation  to your local post office.  Ask them to weigh the envelope so you know exactly how many stamps you will need.  This will avoid having any invitations returned to you for insufficient postage.  If your invitations have a brooch, buckle, or other hard embellishment let them know as well.  These  will usually require additional postage and special handling. Purchase your stamps and place on your main outer envelopes.


Have your invitations Hand-Canceled.

Once all the above steps are complete you are ready to mail out your invitations. Do not place them in your outgoing mail box or drop them in a public mailbox.  Go back to the post office and ask them to “hand-cancel” your invitations.  This will guarantee that your mail will be sorted by a person rather than a machine, which can bend or damage your embellished invitations.
